Selected Programmes

Anything but bog-standard

Hag reprofiling at Lake Vyrnwy

Hag Reprofiling & Peat Dams · RSPB Cymru

Lake Vyrnwy

This multi-season programme represents one of the largest continuous peatland restoration efforts undertaken by our team, with over 2,000 Ha covered from 2022 to 2024.

  • Works delivered within winter operating windows in a remote upland environment
  • Six low ground pressure excavators deployed
  • Hags re-profiled to stable 25–30 degree gradients
Drain blocking at Tal-y-Waen

Drain Closure & Contour Bunding · Eryri National Park

Tal-y-Waen, Snowdonia National Park

Artificial drainage channels were accelerating peat drying and carbon loss within Eryri National Park. Owen Environmental installed wave damming at programmed intervals, followed by zippering to restore a continuous peat surface and re-establish natural hydrology.

  • Low ground pressure excavators fitted with tilt couplers reduced repositioning and surface disturbance, improving shaping precision while limiting impact
  • Following the project's successful completion the water table has been raised, improving hydrological function with clean integration into surrounding peat
Contour bunding at Figyn Blaen Brefi

Stump Flipping & Contour Bunding · NPAP

Figyn Blaen Brefi

Owen Environmental successfully delivered 8,137 metres of contour bunding and 4,376 metres of incorporated stump flipping at Figyn Blaen Brefi for the National Peatland Action Programme.

  • Bunds formed using peat sourced directly from site and sealed with intact vegetation
  • Midway through the programme, we introduced our interlocking cell bunding method first developed at Lake Vyrnwy — enhancing water retention without increasing cost
Forest to bog restoration at Bryn Fawnog

Forest to Bog Restoration · RSPB Cymru

Bryn Fawnog

Owen Environmental was appointed by RSPB Cymru to deliver peatland restoration works at Bryn Fawnog, a 60-hectare former Sitka spruce plantation on the Lake Vyrnwy reserve in Powys — a complex and technically demanding process of returning a previously afforested peatland to functioning blanket bog.

  • Working through winter conditions across a remote upland site
  • Stump grinding, ground smoothing and a programme of peat interventions including contour bunding and hagg reprofiling
