Coastal & Beach Management

Barmouth Beach

Location: Barmouth, Gwynedd  ·  Programme: Annual sand clearance, 2018–2021

Every year, the wind delivers thousands of tonnes of sand onto Barmouth's seafront. From 2018 to 2021, we delivered it back — moving approximately 10,000 tonnes each year to bring the beach down to its managed level and keep the sand where it belongs.

Excavators and articulated dumpers working on open sand, around the tides and a busy public seafront — a very different landscape to our upland work, held to exactly the same standard.

Approximately 10,000 tonnes of sand moved each year across four annual campaigns.
Works planned around tide windows and public access to the beach and promenade.
Beach levels reduced to the managed profile, season after season.
